    Hérodiade (Scène)

    Stéphane Mallarmé

    Parnassian/Symbolist. France. Written in French.

A dramatic poem in which the virgin princess Herodias converses with her nurse about her cold, self-contained beauty.

    What it handed down

To Against the Grain (À rebours) (1884)

    Direct source, well documented.

Des Esseintes owns a manuscript anthology of Mallarmé and quotes 'Hérodiade' in chapter 14, linking it to Gustave Moreau's Salomé paintings he describes in chapter 5. Huysmans's praise brought Mallarmé, then little known, to a wide readership.
