    Faust, Part One

    Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Weimar Classicism. Germany. Written in German.

A verse drama of the scholar Faust's wager with Mephistopheles and his seduction of Gretchen.

    What it handed down

To The Temptation of Saint Anthony (La Tentation de saint Antoine) (1874)

    Structural model, well documented.

Flaubert read Faust in Nerval's translation as a youth and said it overwhelmed him. The Temptation's dramatic form, its tempter figure Hilarion and its night of phantasmagoria owe much to Faust and its Walpurgis Night.
