The First Men in the Moon

    H. G. Wells

    Edwardian. England. Written in English.

Two Englishmen reach the Moon in a sphere coated with anti-gravity Cavorite. They are captured by the insect-like Selenites, who live in a caste society ruled by the Grand Lunar.

    What it handed down

To A Princess of Mars (1912)

    Thematic kinship, conjectural.

Wells's novel popularised the scientific romance of an Earthman stranded among an alien civilisation with its own castes and ruler. Burroughs wrote A Princess of Mars in a pulp market shaped by Wells's success, though he turned the satire into swashbuckling adventure.
