    When the Sleeper Wakes

    H. G. Wells

Late Victorian. England. Written in English.

A man wakes after two centuries of sleep in a vast, stratified, mechanised London where a downtrodden labouring class lives below the elite.

    What it handed down

    To Metropolis (1927)

    Thematic kinship, probable.

Wells reviewed Metropolis in the New York Times in 1927, complaining that it recycled ideas from When the Sleeper Wakes. Both works have a towering, stratified city of the future with labourers kept in the depths below a privileged elite. Lang and von Harbou never acknowledged the debt.
