    Somnium (The Dream)

    Johannes Kepler

Scientific Revolution. Holy Roman Empire. Written in Latin.

A posthumously published fiction of a journey to the Moon, used to describe how astronomy would look from the lunar surface.

    What it handed down

To The Man in the Moone (1638)

    Disputed link, conjectural.

Some scholars have suggested Godwin knew Kepler's lunar ideas, which circulated before the Somnium's 1634 printing. Godwin's book was probably drafted in the 1620s, however, and a direct debt to the Somnium is unproven.
