    A. E. van Vogt

Golden Age science fiction. United States. Written in English.

Gilbert Gosseyn finds his memories are false and his identity uncertain in a future society organized around non-Aristotelian logic. Serialized in Astounding in 1945.

    What it handed down

To Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968)

    Stylistic influence, probable.

Dick said he was drawn into science fiction partly by van Vogt's fiction, which he admired for its sense of unstable reality. Van Vogt's heroes, unsure whether their memories are real or implanted, prefigure Dick's androids with false memories. Deckard's doubt that he himself is human echoes the device.

    Where it came from

The line stops here: van Vogt's stated debt here is to Alfred Korzybski's General Semantics, a non-literary system.
