Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

    Philip K. Dick

New Wave science fiction. United States. Written in English.

Bounty hunter Rick Deckard retires escaped androids in a radioactive, depopulated San Francisco while longing to own a real animal. The novel tests empathy as the line between human and machine.

    What it handed down

    To Blade Runner (1982)

    Direct source, well documented.

Hampton Fancher and David Peoples adapted Dick's novel, keeping Rick Deckard, the Voigt-Kampff empathy test, Rachael and the Tyrell (Rosen) corporation. They dropped Mercerism and most of the electric-animal plot and renamed the androids 'replicants'. Dick saw a preview of the effects reel shortly before his death in 1982 and praised it.
