    What it handed down

    To Anabasis (c. 400 BCE)

    Thematic kinship, conjectural.

Tyrtaeus' elegies, recited by Spartan armies on campaign, set the terms of exhortation to hold the line and die well. Xenophon, an admirer of Sparta who served with the Spartan Cheirisophus, gives his own battle exhortations the same ethic of shame and courage.
