    Plataea Elegy

    Simonides of Ceos

Late Archaic Greece. Greece. Written in Ancient Greek.

Fragmentary narrative elegy, recovered on papyrus, celebrating the Greek march to and victory at Plataea over the Persians.

    What it handed down

    To Histories (c. 430 BCE)

    Thematic kinship, probable.

Simonides' Plataea elegy narrated the Greek march and battle within living memory, in epic style. Scholars such as Deborah Boedeker have argued that it shaped Herodotus' account of the Plataea campaign in Book 9.
