The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner

    James Hogg

    Romantic. Scotland. Written in English.

A Calvinist convinced he is predestined for salvation commits murders urged on by a shape-shifting double.

    What it handed down

To Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886)

    Structural model, probable.

Hogg's Scottish novel of a pious man who commits crimes through a sinister double, told partly in his own written confession, anticipates Stevenson's design. Jekyll's closing statement plays the same role. Stevenson mentions Hogg's book in his letters.

    Where it came from

The line stops here: its sources are Calvinist theology and Scottish folk belief about the devil.
