    Satyricon

    Petronius

Neronian Rome. Imperial Rome. Written in Latin.

A fragmentary comic novel of rogues' wanderings, including the feast of the vulgar freedman Trimalchio.

    What it handed down

    To The Great Gatsby (1925)

    Direct source, well documented.

Fitzgerald's working title was 'Trimalchio in West Egg', and the novel calls Gatsby's career 'as Trimalchio' over in Chapter 7. Gatsby's lavish parties for strangers are modeled on the freedman Trimalchio's vulgar banquet.

    To The Waste Land

    Direct source, well documented.

The poem's epigraph quotes Trimalchio's tale of the Sibyl of Cumae hanging in a jar and wishing to die. It sets the theme of a life that cannot end or renew.
