    The Golden Legend (Legenda Aurea)

    Jacobus de Voragine

High Middle Ages. Italy. Written in Latin.

Collection of saints' lives and feast-day stories, the most widely read devotional book of the late Middle Ages, which retells the legend of Theophilus and his pact with the devil.

    What it handed down

To Historia von D. Johann Fausten (1587)

    Thematic kinship, probable.

The Golden Legend spread the story of Theophilus, who signs a written contract with the devil for worldly advancement, throughout Europe. The Faustbuch's bond signed in blood is a Protestant version of this medieval pact story, but without the Virgin's rescue.
